Roof of Living: A Modern-French Apartment in Hong Kong

Designing a Home that Blends Canadian Lifestyle with Hong Kong's Physical Needs

Inspired by a Canadian lifestyle, designer Keith Chan created Roof of Living, a stunning Modern-French apartment in Hong Kong. This unique design combines the best of both worlds, adapting to the physical needs of Hong Kong while reflecting the homeowners' Canadian roots.

Roof of Living is a five-bedroom, four-bathroom apartment located in Hong Kong. The layout, which is rare in the city, was converted by Keith Chan from an old space to a modern and stylish living area. The transformation from the original design to the Modern-French style is nothing short of remarkable, surprising even the homeowner, Ken, who grew up in this very apartment before moving to Canada.

One of the standout features of Roof of Living is the extra-wide glass sliding door that divides the kitchen and dining hall. This door can be hidden, creating a fully open area that is perfect for hosting large parties, a reflection of the family's Canadian lifestyle. With a spacious kitchen and island bar counter, the Wong family can even serve buffet parties during Christmas.

The living room is equipped with a 55" TV and stereo system, making it the ideal space for the men's NBA parties. Personal touches, such as photo frames and accessories on the TV cabinet, add a homely touch to the space.

The master bathroom features a double basin unit with a wooden tray over the bathtub, designed specifically for the couple. Ken's favorite corner is the shower cubicle, complete with a massage shower jet, providing a relaxing retreat after a long day of work.

The children's room is partitioned off with a sliding door, which is made of magnetic whiteboards for displaying the kids' art. The wall of the kid's bathroom features a fun conversation bubble mirror, adding a playful element to the space. Parents can write messages on the white glass backing using cleanable ink, such as "Hurry Up!" and "Wake up! Boys!"

The design process for Roof of Living involved extensive research and understanding of the client's needs. Keith Chan and his team spent time with the Wong family, conducting interviews and even playing with the two little boys to better understand their characters and requirements.

The design and realization of Roof of Living were made possible through the use of AutoCAD and 3D Studio Max. The design period lasted three months, followed by a four-month construction phase.

Roof of Living has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2016. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skill, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

Roof of Living is a testament to the power of design to create a harmonious blend of different lifestyles and physical needs. By combining elements of Canadian living with the unique characteristics of Hong Kong, Keith Chan has created a truly remarkable and functional living space for the Wong family.
